Modern Clean: a modern family tree chart poster

Clean cards, fine lines and plenty of white space: Modern Clean shows your family as an hourglass, with ancestors above, descendants below and, if you like, siblings, partners and photos.

Modern Clean is the most matter-of-fact of our three templates. Instead of a painted tree it sets every person on a plain card in DM Sans, joined by lines with soft branchings. Coloured lines tell the paternal line, the maternal line and the descendants apart, and a small legend in the bottom-left corner explains the colours.

What the poster shows

In the design step you pick a tree focus. “Ancestors” shows one person’s origins over up to 7 rows on A1 and 5 on A4, counting the root person. “Balanced” gives the classic hourglass: ancestors above, children and grandchildren below. “Descendants” puts a couple and all their descendants at the centre, and the “couple tree” shows both partners’ families side by side.

Children always hang from the couple they come from. If there was an earlier partner, they stand to the left of the root person with their own connecting line and their children beneath.

A family tree with siblings

Modern Clean is the template for the whole family, not just the direct line. You can add the siblings of the root person, the parents and the grandparents, plus nieces and nephews and cousins. Siblings sit at the same size in their generation’s row, never stacked. If a generation does not fit completely, the preview says so plainly instead of quietly dropping people.

If your GEDCOM file contains photos, they appear on the cards wherever the text beside them stays easy to read. The lines come in these colour palettes: Midnight & Sage, Warm Terracotta, Nordic Frost, and Botanical Dark.

Who it is for

Modern Clean suits contemporary homes, a study, and anywhere a painted tree would feel too ornate. As a gift it works for a wedding, because the couple tree brings both families together, for a new baby who gets their place at the bottom of the hourglass, and for a reunion where siblings and cousins want to find each other.

Sizes, paper and frames

Every template is printed in landscape at 300 dpi with lightfast inks.

  • Sizes: currently A4, A3, A2, and A1
  • Unframed on 250gsm museum paper, framed on 200gsm matte paper
  • Frames in natural wood, black or white: pine with shatterproof plexiglass, hanging kit included. Modern Clean comes with the natural frame preselected.

Your data

Modern Clean works with a GEDCOM file from any genealogy program and with the online assistant, where you enter parents, children, partners and siblings by hand, up to 7 generations in each direction. Living people are printed without years by default, and names can be corrected before printing.

Frequently asked questions

What is an hourglass chart?

A layout with the root person in the middle: ancestors spread out above, descendants below. You see where a family comes from and where it is going on one sheet.

Can I show siblings and cousins?

Yes. Siblings of the root person, the parents and the grandparents can be switched on one by one, plus nieces, nephews and cousins, as many as fit at a readable size.

How many generations are possible?

Up to 7 ancestor rows on A1 and 5 on A4, counting the root person. Descendant rows are added in the hourglass; the preview shows what fits on the chosen size.

Do photos from my file appear on the poster?

If your GEDCOM file contains photos, you can show them on the cards. Photos only appear where names and years beside them stay easy to read.

What happens to living people?

Living people appear without years by default. Anyone without a death date who would be at most a hundred years old counts as living. You can switch the protection off in the design step.
