A family tree as a gift
A poster printed from your own family data, framed and delivered ready to hang.
A printed family tree shows the people the recipient comes from: parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, with their years and places, laid out as a picture for the wall. It suits a 30th birthday as well as a golden wedding anniversary.
RootsOnPrint builds the poster from your genealogy data. Upload the GEDCOM file from Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch or any other program, or type the names into the wizard if the family tree only exists in your head. Choose one of three templates, a size from A4 to A1 and, if you like, a wood frame. We print on 250gsm museum paper (framed posters on 200 gsm matte paper) and ship for free. Delivery takes 3–5 business days from payment within Germany; to the USA and Canada we ship framed posters only, in 7–12 business days.

Occasions, formats and order deadlines
Which chart and size suit which occasion, and how early to order so the poster arrives in time. Delivery times count from payment and include printing. Framed posters take 4–7 business days within Germany and 7–12 abroad.
| Occasion | What to print | Recommended format | Order at least |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wedding | Both families side by side: the couple as root, four generations of ancestors (Modern Clean, couple mode) | A2 framed, black or natural | 3 weeks before the day |
| Golden or silver wedding anniversary | Descendant chart: the couple at the base, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren above (Heritage Oak) | A1 framed | 3 weeks |
| Round birthday (60, 70, 80) | Ancestor tree of the birthday person, 4–5 generations (Heritage Oak) | A2, natural frame | 2–3 weeks |
| Christmas | The whole family in one tree, for parents or grandparents to unwrap when everyone is there | A2 or A1 | first week of December (Germany), end of November (USA, Canada, Australia) |
| Mother's Day / Father's Day | Four generations of the mother’s or father’s line (Heritage Fan, sage-cream) | A3 framed | 2 weeks |
| Family reunion | All descendants of the oldest known ancestor, plus the family link so every relative can order a copy | A1 unframed for the wall | 4 weeks, link sent 2 weeks before |
| Housewarming | The new household’s roots, both partners’ lines | A3 or A2 framed | 2 weeks |
| Birth of a child | The newborn as root, parents and grandparents above, for the nursery wall | A3, white frame | 2 weeks |
Gift ideas by occasion
For three occasions we have written down which view suits them, how to collect the data without giving the surprise away, and what the poster can say.
- Golden wedding anniversaryThe couple at the root, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren above – also for a silver or diamond anniversary.
- Grandparent’s milestone birthdayWhere Grandma or Grandpa comes from and who belongs to the family: ancestors, descendants or both on one sheet.
- New baby and christeningThe baby as the root, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents above – a picture for the nursery.
Give a voucher
Missed the delivery deadline, or want the recipient to choose the design and size themselves? Give a voucher. You receive the code by e-mail within minutes, with a card to print or forward.
A finished poster from your data
The poster arrives finished, so nobody has to look up names and write them in. Every box is filled from your data, dates are formatted consistently, long double-barrelled names are shortened by fixed rules instead of being squeezed, and branches without data are left out entirely, with no question marks.
The layout is calculated from the data: generations line up, every person is connected to their parents by a curved branch, and the chart is scaled to fill the sheet. You check the live preview before paying, and the print looks exactly like it.
Three designs, four sizes
Heritage Oak is the classic: an ancestor tree growing out of a painted tree (oak, olive, linden or apple, in four styles: classic, golden hour, realistic, colourful), with name plaques on the branches. It suits grandparents and traditional interiors. Modern Clean is a minimalist hourglass chart set in DM Sans that can also show descendants; it fits modern flats and weddings. Heritage Fan is a 180° fan chart in soft ombré colours with one colour per family branch, closer to a graphic print.
- A4 (29.7 × 21 cm): desk or shelf frame, up to 5 generations depending on the template
- A3 (42 × 29.7 cm): a small picture for the wall, up to 6 generations
- A2 (59.4 × 42 cm): our recommendation for living rooms, up to 6–7 generations
- A1 (84.1 × 59.4 cm): for large walls, reunions and descendant charts, up to 7 generations
Framed or unframed?
Framed posters come in a pine wood frame in black, white or natural, with shatterproof plexiglass and a hanging kit, so they can go on the wall straight out of the box. Unframed posters ship rolled in a sturdy tube (not available to the USA and Canada for now). That makes sense if the recipient already has a frame or you want to choose one together. The pricing page lists the current price of both options; shipping is included either way.
Gifting without the data
You do not need a genealogy account. If the family tree lives in a notebook or in Grandma’s memory, type the names, years and places into the wizard. Three to four generations take about ten minutes, and the poster is generated the same way. For bigger trees, download a free blank chart first, fill it in at the next family dinner and transfer the names afterwards.
Frequently asked questions about gifting
Can I have the poster shipped directly to the recipient?
Yes. Enter the recipient’s address as the shipping address at checkout. The parcel contains no invoice; the invoice goes to your e-mail address.
How early should I order for Christmas?
Delivery times count from payment and include 1–3 business days of printing: within Germany 3–5 business days, to Switzerland 5–8, to the USA and Canada 7–12 (framed posters only), to Australia and New Zealand 7–10. Framed posters travel as parcels and need 4–7 within Germany and 7–12 abroad. Order in the first week of December for Germany and by the end of November for other countries to be safe.
What if a name or date is wrong?
Everything comes from your data, and you see the full poster in the live preview before paying. Misspelled names can be fixed right in the design step under “Correct names”. The change only affects the poster, and you do not need to upload anything again. To fix a wrong date, correct it in your genealogy program and upload the file again, or change it in the wizard. After payment the poster goes to print, so check the preview carefully.
Can other family members order a copy?
After your order you receive a family link. Everyone who gets it can order the same poster in their preferred size and frame, without uploading anything or creating an account.
Is there a gift voucher?
Yes. Further up on this page you can buy a voucher in one of four values. The code arrives by e-mail together with a printable card; the recipient designs the poster themselves and enters the code in the payment step. The voucher is valid until the end of the third year after purchase and can be redeemed once; a higher price, for example for a larger size or a frame, is paid by the recipient.
