How to export a GEDCOM file from Ahnenblatt

Estimated time: 2 minutes
  1. Open your family file

Start Ahnenblatt on your Windows PC and open the family file (.ahn) you want to export. Ahnenblatt saves your tree in its own format, so RootsOnPrint needs a separate GEDCOM export rather than the .ahn file itself.

  2. Go to File, then Export

Click "File" in the menu bar and choose "Export…". In the list of formats select "GEDCOM file (*.ged)". Older versions (Ahnenblatt 2.x) offer the same option under "File > Save as" with the file type set to GEDCOM.

  3. Check the export options

In the export dialog keep "All persons" selected so every branch is included. Choose GEDCOM version 5.5.1 and the character set UTF-8. UTF-8 makes sure umlauts and ß in names and places arrive intact. Media files can be left out; they are not needed for the poster.

  4. Save the .ged file

Pick a folder you can find again, such as Desktop or Downloads, keep the .ged extension and click "Save". Ahnenblatt writes the file within a few seconds. A tree with a few hundred people is typically 100 KB to 1 MB.

  5. Upload to RootsOnPrint

Your GEDCOM file is ready. Upload it at RootsOnPrint and design your poster there.

Troubleshooting

Umlauts look broken after upload?

The file was probably exported with the ANSI or ANSEL character set. Export again and choose UTF-8 in the export dialog. RootsOnPrint also reads ANSEL files, but UTF-8 is the safest choice.

The upload rejects my .ahn file?

Only GEDCOM files (.ged) are accepted. The .ahn file is Ahnenblatt's own format; use "File > Export" to create a .ged file as described above.

Living relatives are missing?

Ahnenblatt can hide living persons in exports if the privacy option is enabled. Check the export options and disable "anonymise living persons" (or similar) if you want them on the poster; you decide yourself which relatives appear.
