A family tree gift for a golden anniversary
Fifty years of marriage, and one sheet that shows what came of it: children, grandchildren, perhaps great-grandchildren already. A printed family tree poster made from your real family data.
By their golden anniversary, most couples have everything a shop can sell. What is missing is a picture of the family that grew over those decades. A family tree shows exactly that: the couple at the root, and above them every child with their partner, every grandchild and every great-grandchild, with names and years. At the party the poster gets passed around, and the grandchildren look for themselves on it.
The same idea works for a silver anniversary after 25 years, when the children are often still young and the two partners’ ancestry has more to show, and for a diamond anniversary after 60 years, when the family often spans four generations.

Descendants or ancestry: which view to choose
There are two ways to look at a couple. The descendant view shows what grew out of the marriage. In Heritage Oak you set the direction to “Descendants” and pick one of the two spouses as the root person. With the “Spouse on the card” switch, the partner appears as a line “& Name” on the card, and on descendant trees on every card. That way the children carry their partners too, and the tree becomes a family chronicle.
Modern Clean is the graphic alternative: the couple side by side on their own cards, their parents above if you like, children and grandchildren below in clean lines. With a GEDCOM file there are presets for this, such as “Couple’s” (both partners’ families) and “Descendants”. Heritage Fan is an ancestor fan and only shows one person’s ancestors; for a golden anniversary it works better as a companion piece, for example one fan for each partner.
- Heritage Oak, descendants: the couple at the foot of the trunk, the family growing into the crown
- Modern Clean: the couple in the middle, ancestry above, children and grandchildren below
- Heritage Fan: one partner’s ancestors in a semicircle, as a second picture
A title and subtitle for the day
The title is the family name by default. Under “Title & labels” you can replace it, for instance with “John & Mary Becker”. Heritage Oak and Modern Clean add a custom subtitle below, such as “Golden anniversary · 1976–2026” or the place where they married. Heritage Fan prints the title only. A longer dedication belongs on the gift card; on the poster, the space belongs to the names.
A note on years: by default the poster prints living people without years (the “Protect living persons” switch). If the couple’s and the children’s birth years should show, turn the option off in the design step. It is worth checking with the children first that everyone is happy with that.
Collecting the data without the couple noticing
The surprise works best if you collect the data from the children rather than from the couple. Each child knows the names and birth years of their own family; a short message in the family group chat is often enough. Missing years are no problem: cards without a year are still set cleanly, and branches without data are left out instead of showing empty boxes.
You do not need a GEDCOM file. In the wizard you enter one spouse first, then the partner, the children and the grandchildren, each with a name and, if known, a birth year. It records up to 7 generations in each direction, great-grandchildren included. If someone in the family already keeps a tree on Ancestry, MyHeritage or FamilySearch, exporting a GEDCOM file is quicker.
Size, frame and delivery
With a large family every card counts. The live preview shows exactly how full the sheet gets before you pay, and the print looks just like it. Framed posters come in a pine wood frame (black, white or natural) with shatterproof plexiglass and a hanging kit, ready for the wall; unframed posters are printed on 250gsm museum paper. To the USA and Canada we currently ship framed posters in A4, which holds up to 5 generations depending on the template.
You can have the poster shipped straight to the couple, or to one of the children who hands it over at the party; the invoice goes to you, not into the parcel. Framed posters to the USA and Canada take 7–12 business days from payment, within Germany 3–5. After your order you receive a family link, so siblings and grandchildren can order the same poster for themselves.
Not all the data yet?
Give a voucher instead. It arrives by e-mail within minutes, together with a card to print, and the recipients design their poster themselves later. It is valid until the end of the third year after purchase.
In time for Christmas
If the poster should be under the tree, these are the deadlines (destination: United States, Christmas 2026):
- Framed: order by 4 December (7–12 business days from payment)
The dates for every destination are in our article on Christmas order deadlines. If you miss the date, a gift voucher arrives by e-mail within minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Can both spouses be the root of the poster?
One person is the root. In Heritage Oak the “Spouse on the card” switch puts the partner on the same card as a line “& Name”. Modern Clean places the couple side by side, each on their own card. If a card gets too full, the partner line is left out; the preview shows this before you pay.
What about an earlier marriage or a child who has died?
People who have died appear in the tree with their years like everyone else. Enter an earlier marriage in the wizard as a further partner; Modern Clean can show a further partner of the root person with their own line and their shared children.
Does this work for a silver or diamond anniversary too?
Yes. At a silver anniversary the children are often still young, so a couple’s tree with both partners’ ancestors shows more. By a diamond anniversary the family often reaches the great-grandchildren, and the Heritage Oak descendant view really comes into its own.
How early should I order?
Framed posters take 7–12 business days from payment to the USA and Canada, and 4–7 within Germany. Add a few days for collecting the data; starting two to three weeks before the party keeps it relaxed.
