How to Export a GEDCOM File from Any Genealogy Program

Estimated time: 2–5 minutes
  1. Look for the Export option

In most genealogy software, the export feature is found under the "File" menu. Look for options labeled "Export", "GEDCOM", "Backup", or "Save As".

  2. Select GEDCOM as the format

When choosing an export format, select GEDCOM (.ged). If you are given a version choice, pick GEDCOM 5.5.1 for the best compatibility. Avoid proprietary backup formats.

  3. Choose what to include

Most programs will ask whether to export all people or a subset. For the best results, export your entire tree. You can select the root person and number of generations later on RootsOnPrint.

  4. Save and verify

Save the .ged file to a location you can easily find, like your Desktop or Downloads folder. The file should typically be between 100 KB and 5 MB. If it saved correctly, you are ready to upload.

  5. Upload to RootsOnPrint

Your GEDCOM file is ready. Upload it at RootsOnPrint and design your poster there.

Troubleshooting

Cannot find an export option?

Try searching your software's help documentation for "GEDCOM" or "export". Some programs use different terminology: "Backup", "Save As", or "Share" may lead to the export feature. If your software does not support GEDCOM export, consider importing your data into a free tool like Gramps (gramps-project.org) first.

Which GEDCOM version?

GEDCOM 5.5.1 is the most widely supported version and is recommended. GEDCOM 5.5 also works. RootsOnPrint also reads GEDCOM 7.0. GEDCOM X is a different format and cannot be uploaded.

File will not upload?

Make sure the file has a .ged extension and is under 10 MB. If the file is larger, try exporting without media attachments or notes. If it still fails, email us at hallo@rootsonprint.com.
