How to export a GEDCOM file from Heredis

Estimated time: 2 minutes
  1. Open your genealogy

Start Heredis on Windows or Mac and open the genealogy you want to print. Heredis saves in its own file format, so the poster needs a separate GEDCOM export.

  2. Go to File › Export › GEDCOM

Click the “File” menu, then “Export” and “GEDCOM” (French interface: “Fichier › Exporter › GEDCOM”). The export settings open. As the scope choose “Entire file” on Windows or “All branches” on Mac.

  3. Choose UTF-8 and the persons

As the character set choose “UTF-8”; the alternatives “Mac” and “Windows (ANSI)” can damage accents and special letters. Keep “Export all persons”. For confidential persons choose “Export confidential persons” if they should appear with their data; the other choices export surnames only or blur or hide the data. On Mac, untick “Persons born less than …” if recent births should be included. Leave “Create media folder” unticked; the poster needs no media.

  4. Export and save

Click “Export”, enter a file name and choose a folder you can find again, such as Desktop or Downloads. Heredis writes a GEDCOM 5.5.1 file ending in .ged.

  5. Upload to RootsOnPrint

Your GEDCOM file is ready. Upload it at RootsOnPrint and design your poster there.

Troubleshooting

The exported file is empty?

Heredis writes an empty GEDCOM when the root person of the file is affected by a restriction, for example marked as confidential or excluded as a marked person. Lift the restriction for the root person or export all persons, then try again.

Accents look wrong after the upload?

The file was written with the “Mac” or “Windows (ANSI)” character set. Export again with “UTF-8”. RootsOnPrint reads ANSI files too, but UTF-8 is the safe choice.

Heredis on a phone or tablet?

In Heredis for Android open the genealogy, tap the menu (three lines, top left) › “Export a GEDCOM” › “Continue” and save the file on the device first, then email it to yourself or move it to the cloud. We could not verify the steps for the iPhone and iPad app; if in doubt, export from the desktop version.
