How to export a GEDCOM file from Geni

Estimated time: 5 minutes
  1. Know the limits

Geni (part of MyHeritage) is one large shared world tree, so it caps the export: according to the official help, a GEDCOM export contains at most four times as many profiles as you added yourself, up to 5,000 profiles with a free Basic account and 50,000 with Pro. For a poster of four to seven generations that is usually enough.

  2. Open the GEDCOM export

Sign in at geni.com on a computer and choose “Family” › “Share your tree” › “GEDCOM Export”. Geni rearranges its menus from time to time; if the entry is missing, search Geni’s help for “GEDCOM export”.

  3. Choose scope and type

Choose what to export: “Blood relatives”, “Ancestors”, “Descendants” or “Forest” (which adds the connected trees of in-laws). For an ancestor poster “Ancestors” is the leanest choice. Set the type to “GEDCOM 5.5”, not a Family Tree Builder format, and click “Export GEDCOM file”.

  4. Save the file

Large exports take a while. When the browser asks, save the .ged file on the Desktop or in Downloads.

  5. Upload to RootsOnPrint

Your GEDCOM file is ready. Upload it at RootsOnPrint and design your poster there.

Troubleshooting

The file contains only a few people?

The cap is four times the profiles you added yourself, so it stays small if you added few profiles. Choose “Ancestors” rather than “Blood relatives” so the limit goes to the generations the poster shows, or type the family into the RootsOnPrint wizard instead.

The upload rejects the file?

The type was probably left on a Family Tree Builder format. Export again with the type “GEDCOM 5.5”; the file must end in .ged.

Do I need Geni Pro?

No. Free accounts can export up to 5,000 profiles; Pro only raises the ceiling to 50,000. A poster never needs that many people.
